The World Cup winner moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2013 for £42.5 million and has revealed he promised Arsene Wenger previously of his intention to join the Gunners.
Mesut Ozil says Arsenal was always his first choice if he ever left Real Madrid.
The north London outfit smashed their transfer record to bring the World Cup winner to the Emirates Stadium in 2013 in a deal worth £42.5 million, just hours after Real Madrid paid £86 million to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.
Ozil has hinted that Wenger showed an interest in Ozil before his deadline-day move three years ago, telling him that if he were ever to leave the Spanish giants it would be to join Arsenal.
“I spoke with Wenger and he wanted me at Arsenal. I said ‘if I get the opportunity to change clubs, you’ll be the first [choice]’,” he told Arsenal’s YouTube channel.
“So we spoke and I decided to come. I remember [Thierry] Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires – such great players – and I wanted to be a part of them.
“My first and second year we won the FA Cup. I really enjoy playing for such a big club like Arsenal.”
