The justices screened by the Senator David Umaru-led committee were Justice Sidi Dauda Bage (North-Central) and Justice Paul Adamu Galinje (North-East).

Based on the recommendation of the National Judiciary Council in conformity with Section 231 Subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President forwarded the names of the judges to the Senate for confirmation as Supreme Court Justices.

A statement from the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, quoted him as saying the nominees had fulfilled the necessary requirements to appear before the Senate committee.

He expressed optimism that the President’s request would receive the usual expeditious attention and consideration of the lawmakers.

Umaru, in his remarks, said the committee was set up by the Senate to work for the interest of the nation and that it would work to fulfill the purpose for which it was set up.

The nominees, during the screening, addressed issues concerning reforms in the judiciary, the time frame for dispensing justice, due regard to technicalities, substantial justice and conflicting judgments.

The Senate had recently screened and confirmed the nominations of Justice Ejembi Eko (Benue) and Justice Amina Augie (Kebbi) as Justices of the Supreme Court.
