Kalu was devastated,
Kalu: “That can’t be my Caro! Wait!” he tried the number but it was switched off, “hey! Hey!! Chimo! Caro please, don’t do that to me na!” he was standing outside the hospital building close to one of the trees. Tears had the pupils dancing. He comported himself as footsteps trudged towards him. It was Precious.
Tanko welcomed her with a smile. A smile appearing on a handsome face was gold ring glittering on the finger of a queen. There was no denial Tanko was a handsome gentleman with a charm that would sweep any woman off her feet; well shaved side boards and fine haircut with its trimming glaringly done by a first class barber. He looked too young for forty five but money has a way of maintaining youthfulness. The table was filled with all sorts of assorted wine of alcoholic and non-alcoholic with roses everywhere, on the floor and table. It was an awesome sight. He had reserved that area only for them. Tanko had fallen in love with Caro from the first day they met and was determined to make her fall for him too.
Tanko: “Have a sit,Perle!” he dragged the chair for her to sit.
With a smile,
Caro: “Thank you!”
Tanko: “My stomach churns. I’m so hungry!”
Caro who picked her words whenever she was around Tanko didn’t say much. His Canadian accent made her feel inferior but he had always told her to feel free around him. One of the reasons why she had to learn English so fast was because of Tanko, not as if she was fallen for him but she wanted to impress him.
Tanko: “Aren’t you hungry?”
Tanko: “stop being shy around me please! I beg of you! I know you feel inadequate because you’re yet to get to that level of impeccability but with the way you’re learning in no time even the queen herself would have a stern competition!”
The major challenge she was faced with was mother tongue interference.
Caro: “Uhm, I’m hungry too!” Caro got it right this time.. no more “hungly”
Tanko snapped the fingers and waiters arrived. He made an order for food.
Precious: “Hey,Kalu!” he turned and gave her feigned smile but it was only a Versace to hide his worries.
Kalu: “How’s Mama Chinedu doing?”
Precious: “She is sleeping now. Doctor said she is fine but they are keeping her for observation.”
Kalu: “Wow! Thank God! Are you staying with her?”
Precious: “would have loved to but Iya Kpati and Ene insisted on staying and that I should go!”
Kalu: “Lemme quickly go and bid them goodnight so we could go home!”
They went in together.
After they had eaten and had some drinks. Tanko who was a little tipsy told Caro many stories and indeed, she was cracked up.
Tanko: “lemme tell you a story!” he sipped from his glass.
Caro who was laughing replied,
Tanko: “A friend of mine from Uk complained to me that he felt that they had the worst government ever, for a whole month they had light only for 23 hours instead of 24, “put up a Briton accent mimicking the White friend, “ ‘how can citizens be left in blackout for one whole hour? Isn’t that outrageous?’ I then said to myself” he switched to pidgin, “come naija you no go get battery to type wetin dey pain you sef!”
They both were laughing,
Caro: “Naija and e wahara … sorry “wahala” … she corrected herself
Tanko: “I tell you!” he beckoned for a waiter and whispered into the ears. In less than five minutes, a song by Lionel Richie and Enrique Iglesais, ‘Loving a woman’ blared from the speakers. He stood up and opened the right palm towards Caro, “Can you join me for a dance?” she shook her head, “Please, don’t turn down a gentleman’s request.”
Caro: “I’m shy!”
She placed her hand in his hands. And they were engrossed in a dance.
Kalu and Precious were on their way home as his phone beeped. It was Ejiro.
Kalu: “hello,” he said in an arctic manner.
Ejiro: “Kay, baby, sup?”
Kalu: “I’ve told you not to call me that again!”
Ejiro: “Kay, you sef! I don’t understand anymore! You’ve just changed!”
Kalu: “Enya, biko, I’m in no mood for this right now! Just coming from the hospital!”
Ejiro: “Jesus!hospital? what happened?”
Precious was humming a song in a low tone as they trekked.
Kalu: “Please, let’s talk some other time!” he ended the call before she could say another word.
Precious asked him what was wrong with him and he couldn’t lie. If he were to lie to anybody it shouldn’t be Precious. He narrated what happened and ended with an assumption, “I think Caro is cheating on me!”
Precious: “No na! it’s too early to conclude and besides remember you told me that sometimes her network is messy and the other day you called her and it was an old woman that spoke to you. You know how network is in this country. Have you tried calling her again?”
Kalu: “It is switched off!” he sulked.
Precious: “Relax. Talk to her tomorrow then. Cheer up joor,” she tickled him and fled screaming, “lover boy!”
Kalu: “I go wound you!” he chased after her.
As Caro was about entering the car; he stole a kiss from her. It felt good but her heart was pounding. She melted, he went for another and before a blip they claw at each other. Caro had never kissed anyone that good. Kalu wasn’t really a good kisser. The truth was he seldom touched her. They had only had sex once, and since then he’d always say,
Kalu: “What’s the essence of rushing when we are going to be married and besides it is a sin against God!”
Tanko kissed her softly as the hands frolicked around her neck and ears producing a moaning rhythm from her. Tightly she held unto him as he bit her lower lips. He moaned too. They were emitting fire. The thought of Kalu flashed in,
Caro: “Stop! I can’t do this! Take me home now!!!”
Tanko, bit his lower lips and started the car.
Question: “Would Tanko take her home? Do you think Caro would stand by her word? Was it right for Kalu to be getting close to Precious?”
