Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho needs a busy January transfer window if he is to steer his side into the top four this season, according to Paul Merson.
The former Arsenal midfielder also criticised the Red Devils boss for his recent public shaming of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, who ruled themselves out of the recent Swansea City game due to fear of worsening their injury problems.
While Merson agrees that Mourinho should expect more from his players, he feels the Portuguese did not need to go public with his accusations.
United have not looked convincing for much of the season so far, despite plenty of optimism when Mourinho took over in the summer, and Merson feels they’re not currently even looking like a top four side.
‘Jose Mourinho has got to buy some players in January or Manchester United will not finish in the top four,’ Merson told the Daily Star.
‘That team is not good enough and they seem to have a lot of problems. I understand what he’s saying about how players should play even if they’re not 100%.
‘But there’s a way of doing it. If you do it in public you start losing players and that’s dangerous.’
