Liverpool‘s winning run in the Premier League has been halted by a resolute Southampton side at the St Mary’s Stadium this afternoon.
The Reds had won their last three consecutive top flight matches, scoring an incredible 12 goals in that time to go top of the table before the international break.
Still, Jurgen Klopp’s side didn’t really get going today as their usually frightening attacking trio of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all had off-days.
Firmino and Mane were particularly guilty of missing good chances, but Klopp will be concerned overall by his side’s drop in sharpness throughout.
Southampton’s defence was in good form on the day, with Virgil van Dijk and Jose Fonte both making last-ditch tackles to deny the visitors a clear path through on goal, but Liverpool should have done better than just two shots on target in the entire 90 minutes.
The draw keeps Liverpool top for the time being after Arsenal dropped points today, but Chelsea can overtake them when they take on Middlesbrough tomorrow afternoon.
