Van Gaal was sacked by United in the summer after finishing fifth in the Premier League last term.

During his two-year spell in charge, the Dutchman spent over £200 million attempting to re-establish the Red Devils as a European force.

While Dunphy believes the club are in better hands with his replacement Jose Mourinho, he couldn’t resist one last shot at Van Gaal, claiming a lot of his expensive signings haven’t worked out

“I think they’ve got an awful lot of work to do to get into the top four. I don’t think they will,” Dunphy, who began his career at Old Trafford, told listeners on RTE.

“I think that’s not entirely Mourinho’s fault. Van Gaal bought an awful lot of rubbish there. Marcos Rojo was playing on Saturday. He’s not a player at all!”

Van Gaal’s countryman Memphis Depay, who has struggled in England since arriving from PSV in 2015, was also called out for his contribution.

“Where’s Memphis Depay? He was another player they paid a lot of money for.

“If you add up all the duds they bought in the Van Gaal era, you find that amounts to an awful lot of money. Those wages have to be paid. These guys are on huge money.

“There are picture of Memphis floating around Manchester in his Rolls Royce, which is one of a number of big cars he has. But he’s not playing any football. It’s a good job if you can get it.”
