Jose Mourinho wants more time, ‘blames issues on Van Gaal, Moyes’

Jose Mourinho believes he needs at least two transfer windows to ‘return Manchester United’s squad to a level expected of the club’.

According to the Daily Record, the manager has been left ‘concerned’ by the current standard of his players.

Duncan Castles writes that the Portuguese finds the squad he has inherited from Louis van Gaal ‘unfit for purpose’, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor David Moyes also apportioned some of the blame.

Mourinho has questioned how the players those two have signed cannot ‘deliver a consistency of performance’ while they also ‘accept poor results’, according to the report.

Despite spending over £150million on four players this summer – only Manchester City spent more, it is claimed that Mourinho prefers to ‘adopt a surgical approach to the transfer market’, and that the ‘deficiencies’ in the squad cannot be overcome with just two windows worth of investment.

“We need quality players, but you can not do it in one to two transfer windows,” a source told Castles. “You cannot buy four or five players in one go of the level that we need.”

It is added that Van Gaal’s transfer decision, conducted by Ed Woodward, ‘ultimately served to weaken United’s squad’.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea, who sacked him in December.
