Philippe Coutinho has revealed that his Liverpool teammates never really believed in themselves before Jurgen Klopp arrived on Merseyside.

Klopp’s takeover at Liverpool has ushered in a purple patch of form for the Reds as he has lead his team to second in the Premier League table.

Liverpool are considered serious title contenders this season and Coutinho says their new found belief is all down to the man at the helm.

‘It’s about putting that (winning) mentality into us,’ Coutinho told Sky Sports.

‘It’s all about the confidence and the mentality that the coach has given us.

‘This used to be a team that didn’t really believe in itself.

‘Now the players feel more comfortable and this comes from the coach.

‘That’s something that’s reflected on the pitch and in the results.’

Liverpool do not have to worry about European football this season after missing out on Europa League and a Champions League spot last campaign.

As a result the Reds have had more time on the training pitch to adjust to the demands of Klopp and alter their style to suit his game.

Liverpool have been immensely hard working and persistent in their play this season and although Coutinho admitted there is ‘a lot’ of training, he insisted that was a good thing.

‘There’s definitely more time now to work on our tactics in training and for the coach to get to know us,’ he said.

‘I like the tactical training we are doing.

‘But yes, there is a lot of it.

‘He is teaching us to press when we don’t have the ball and keeping that pressure up.

‘Then we have to keep possession when we do have the ball.’
