Diego Costa hit with £185,000 fine by Chelsea before he was allowed back to train with squad

Diego Costa was hit with a £185,000 fine by Chelsea before he was allowed back to train with the first team squad.

Costa had been forced to train alone at the club’s Cobham training centre after being axed for the trip to Leicester following a bust-up with boss Antonio Conte.

The row over his fitness surrounding a back injury led to Costa being dumped from the first-team squad, who went on to win 3-0 against the Foxes last week.

He was then forced to spend Monday training on his own while his teammates enjoyed a welcome day off, amid fears he was pushing for a move to China.

The 14-goal striker was finally allowed back to link up with the senior squad on Tuesday after he ironed out his differences with Conte and Julio Tous.

It was a row with ex-Italian coach Tous last week that started the chain of events that led to Costa being axed by his manager.

But Chelsea were unwilling to let the Spanish international off the hook completely, so they imposed a fine of a week’s wages as punishment.

Costa will remain at Chelsea for the remainder of the season despite interest from the Chinese Super League, where he was offered around £575,000-a-week to join.

The owner of newly promoted Tianjin Quanjian yesterday admitted he had held talks with Costa’s agent Jorge Mendes about signing the forward, but was told he was not available until the summer.

Chelsea are desperate for Costa to get back firing again as their man striker in the club’s fight to win the Premier League.

Conte’s side currently hold a seven point lead at the top of the table ahead of Tottenham and Liverpool – but they only have unproven Michy Batshuayi as back-up in the main striking role.

Chelsea refused to comment when they were contacted about the fine.
