Argentina legend Diego Maradona admits he wishes Cristiano Ronaldo could partner Lionel Messi for his national team and help deliver the World Cup to the South American nation.
The 56-year-old, himself a World Cup winner during his playing days, admits he’s a huge fan of the Real Madrid and Portugal star, who helped guide his country to glory at Euro 2016 last summer.
Still, while Maradona says he personally prefers Messi to Ronaldo, he believes the Barcelona front-man cannot win the World Cup for his country on his own.
Messi has endured plenty of frustration on the international stage, losing the 2014 World Cup final with Argentina, as well as three Copa America finals in 2007, 2015 and 2016.
Maradona believes Messi would still be remembered even without a major international trophy, but couldn’t hide his love for Ronaldo as he admitted he wished he were Argentinian.
‘Cristiano is an animal,’ Maradona told TyC Sports. ‘I wish he was Argentine.
‘But I still prefer Messi. He is enjoying playing football and goes by opponents with ease.
‘Leo cannot deliver the World Cup on his own. Even if he does not win a World Cup, we will still remember him.’
