Gov. Ambode To Host Muslims In 20 Centres For Eid-el-Fitri Celebration

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, yesterday stated that the need to encourage bonding among residents and enhance community participation in governance informed the decision of his administration to host Muslims in 20 centres across the state for the Eid-el-Fitri celebration.

Ambode disclosed this while receiving members of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs, who paid him a visit at the Lagos House.

He said, “Before now, anytime we are having festivities, especially Ramadan, Christmas, New Year’s Day celebration and so on, people spend a lot of money to come from different parts of Lagos to celebrate with us here at the State House.

“But I thought that if we could make them remain in their communities and celebrate there, we would be promoting the practice of inclusive government so that everybody feels government everywhere.

“Instead of coming to the State House, the traditional rulers, the Chief Imams and every other person will celebrate the Ramadan and recital of Quran in their communities and so, there is a sense of belonging. We must practise community governance, using our different platforms to celebrate ourselves.”

Promising to visit some of the centres during the celebration, Ambode urged traditional rulers, community and religious leaders to also join in the celebration.

Meanwhile, the governor has commended the measures taken so far by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, to quell tensions generated by the agitations of some ethnic nationalities, seeking to break away from Nigeria.

While stating that Lagos State would continue to support efforts to keep Nigeria as one entity, Ambode said the unity of the country must remain paramount in the minds of all citizens.

He said, “I want to reiterate our support for the Federal Government to keep the unity of Nigeria and also uphold the tenets of the constitution. We are ready to do everything to support the Acting President and the Federal Government to ensure that Lagos and Nigeria remain peaceful.”
