Arsene Wenger will make a move for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial if he fails to lure Kylian Mbappe to Arsenal, according to reports.
The Mail on Sunday claims that Wenger is ‘obsessed’ with trying to sign the Monaco forward but faces an uphill battle to sign the 18-year-old ahead of Real Madrid.
But should Wenger end up unsuccessful in his pursuit of Mbappe, the Arsenal manager will turn his attention to Martial and is ready to test United’s resolve with a £40 million offer.
Due to the animosity between Wenger and Jose Mourinho, it’s claimed that Arsenal would ask negotiations to be conducted at boardroom level only.
Martial endured a difficult first season under Mourinho and was publicly criticised by the United manager.
‘Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes,’ Mourinho said in April.
‘Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes. But he needs to give me things that I like very much.’
Martial, a £46.2m signing from Monaco nearly two years ago, started only 18 games in the Premier League last season.
The 21-year-old has also been overlooked by Didier Deschamps for France’s last three squads and his place at next year’s World Cup could be in doubt.
