Pedro facial injuries worse than feared as Antonio Conte predicts return date

The injuries suffered by Chelsea forward Pedro in his collision with David Ospina are worse than feared.

The Spain international was hurt in Beijing on Saturday when the Arsenal goalkeeper came flying out to punch the ball to safety.

In doing so he caught Pedro in the face and the Chelsea player had to be taken off.

Having undergone tests in Beijing and since returned to London from Chelsea’s tour it’s transpired that Pedro has suffered multiple fractures.

‘The situation was more serious,’ said Antonio Conte. ‘I hoped it would be only concussion but he has multiple fractures.’

The Chelsea manager hopes that with the aid of a mask Pedro could return to training in 10 days.

‘I think with a mask in 10 days he could come back to work with us.’

Chelsea players are not averse to wearing masks with Pedro himself having worn one in the past.

John Terry, Petr Cech, Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nemanja Matic, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Diego Costa and Gary Cahill are among others who’ve worn facial protection.

‘I was a player,’ he said ahead of his side’s match with Bayern Munich in Singapore on Tuesday. ‘I know it was an accident. It can happen, Ospina tried to take the ball.’

Pedro scored nine goals and contributed nine assists in 35 league appearances last term.
