Police kill 4 robbers in gun duel in Calabar

Four armed men have been reportedly killed in Calabar during an exchange of gun fire.

Among the four shot dead included one suspects released from prison barely two weeks ago for allegedly robbing an unidentified man and disposing him of some valuables.

The police patrol team were said to have pursued the gang ‎from a street in Calabar South where they robbers has rubbed some businessmen about 12noon and zoomed off.

When the gun-trotting men discovered they were being trailed by police the opened fire on the security and the police replied and still pursued them to Barracks Road they exchanged gun fire, leading to the death of the four armed bandit.

After killing the criminals, the police quickly drove the corpses to the state command.

An eye witness, Agba Jacobs, said: “The robbers were pursued from “somewhere” where they had robbed some businessmen and took off not knowing that police has got information and trailed them.

“Luckily they were intercepted opposite Government Secondary School, Barracks Road where there was an exchange of gunfireabout 12.30 pm. They bandits drove in a sport utility vehicle.

‎”It was not an easy task as the Police were shooting and the robbers replies but we’re later overpowered by men of State Anti-Robbery Squad which pursued them were better prepared.

‎”They killed four of robbers, including one person who some people said just returned from prison, while one was arrested alive,” Jacobs narrated.

According to him, when the robbers saw they were being overpowered they tried to escape but the Police quickly gunned them down.

Another witness a teacher in Government Secondary School Barracks Road, who don’t want her name in print, said: “The criminals killed have just been taken to the Police headquarters. We counted four of them while one was still breathing as at the time they drove away.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident but could not give the number of casualties.

Ugbo said: “I have just confirmed that some robbers have been intercepted but I cannot give you the casualty figure now.”
