Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, was absent at a reconciliatory meeting of the party for the North-East zone held in Yola on Tuesday.
Sheriff, it was learnt, did not send any representatives or any message on why he would not attend the meeting.
A former Adamawa State Governor, Boni Haruna; a former Minister of women Affairs, Zainab Maina; and Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State, who could not be at the meeting, however, registered their absence with apologies.
However, the PDP at the peace meeting reiterated its commitment to the reconciliation of all aggrieved members within its fold before the 2019 elections.
The Taraba State Governor, Mr. Darius Ishaku, who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said the disposition of the national leadership remained that of mending all parts within the party before 2019.
Ishaku, who is the Chairman, North-East Reconciliation Committee of the PDP, said, “One of such resolutions of the party is to stop impunity with the emergence of candidates. The Jerry Gana committee, saddled with finding out why the party lost the 2015 elections, in its report, observed wide discontent within the party due to ‘godfatherism.’
“People were imposed as candidates against the wishes of the people, while those without godfathers were left disillusioned and angered that people were being imposed on them,” he stated.
He, however, said the aim of the meeting was to achieve reconciliation of all aggrieved members, adding that the door of the party was opened to welcome all who had left.
“We should not leave our party for another because we did not make it at the time we wanted. There’s a need for each of us to remain one in the PDP so that when the fruits of our efforts are ripe, we shall all partake in it,’’ Ishaku added.
The North-East Zonal Vice-Chairman, PDP, Emmanuel Njiwa, in his welcome remarks, described the reconciliation meeting as a “very serious gathering to discuss how we will reconcile ourselves in the PDP.’’
Among notable members of the party in attendance at the meeting were Amb. Wilberforce Juta; a former Adamawa State Acting Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri; Senator Folashade Grace Bent, Chief Joel Madaki, Mr. Auwal Tukur and the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Haruna Manu.
The delegates at the meeting were from Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Taraba and Gombe states, the six states which make up the zone.
